When it comes to consumer products, men have generally limited choices. There are more choices when it comes to personal grooming, but they follow a narrow path of small choices differentiated by brands.
Hair removal, for most civilian males, involves a simple choice: electric shaver or hand razor. Electric shaver devolves into brand choices; there are differences that googling "best" will resolve.
Manual shavers offer small choices ~ number of blades, mostly. Shaving cream is more preference than choice: do you prefer a cream or gel (that becomes a cream) or just soap. From there, you've reached the brand level.
You see where this is going.
Women's choices are on a longer decision tree.
Start with "what hair are you looking to remove?" Facial, underarm, leg, bikini area, brows, areas where There Should Be No Hair?
(I include brows because I recently uncovered the existence tiny razors for brow grooming).
Men's choice: shave.
Women's choice: shave, pluck, epilate, depilitate, wax. I'm assuming the choice has already been made to skip laser or electrolysis (which always reminds me of middle school science where you separate water and watch the oxygen flare and the hydrogen pop).
Most of us are not women. For some that's a "not yet" condition. But we're now confronted with the women's choices, simply because hair removal is essential. A woman from, say, the middle east might have visible dark hair on her arms and she might choose to leave it there. We blend better if we're more in the mainstream which means more femme, less gorilla.
I would like to find a permanent solution to facial hair that won't break the bank. In the meantime, it's a daily (or at least weekly) battle.
Mostly, I shave. I use a combination of hand and electric razor. I've tried "specialty" groomers but not found them satisfactory. I've discovered areas where electric should be avoided at all costs: underarms, chest near underarms, inside elbows, behind knees... the skin in these areas will cut and bleed, get abrased, or otherwise look horrible and cause pain, neither of which are my goals.
Before I go out, I shave my face and neck with an electric. Then I shower and feel for any facial roughness and go over those areas with a hand razor. For me, I cannot get as close in some areas (above lip) with a hand razor as with an electric, and I can't get as close in other areas (below ear) with an electric as a hand razor.
Legs and arms, I can go either way, avoiding the sensitive areas with the electric.
Underarms are difficult for me. Unless I'm diligent, the hair grows too long for a hand razor and the skin won't ever tolerate my electric (even just trimming).
Feet and hands are mostly electric territory. My toes especially will get cut easily with a hand razor.
I do pluck sometimes. Stray hairs, brows, fingers sometimes. I don't pluck much. I have learned that a good tweezer does make a difference. Someday, I'll buy one instead of the crappy one I have now.
I've tried epilating. I've written about my experiences before. Here's my bottom line: I'm done with epilating. It hurts (not for long, but it hurts). It doesn't do as thorough a job as I'd like. And, for some reason, the epilated parts itch like mad. I mean insane itching to the point where my scratching will leave cuts in my skin. If I was a dog, I'd be wearing one of those collars after epilating. For the record, growing hair after shaving or otherwise eliminating it does not itch.
I've been waxed. I've had my arms, legs, back, brows, and neck waxed. Although the harshest, fastest-growing hair is on my chest and stomach, I do not want to have my chest waxed. I have heard it is just about the most painful there is. I bought a home wax kit but I could never bring myself to cause that much pain to myself and never used it.
I've depilated on-and-off. More on this tomorrow. For now, I'm just wondering why I want to write "depilitated" instead of "depilated."

On A Jet Plane
While you're reading this, I'm probably on a plane heading towards Phoenix, or on a second plane heading towards Tucson, or in a rental car driving to Sierra Vista.
As I mentioned a few days ago, my plan was to go out next month, after my toe has healed. I was going to arrange to go out on Saturday and stay in Tucson that night. There is a pretty active trans group in Tucson, and I was hoping to meet up with some of the ladies. With luck, I'd get to see Liz again as well.
But the project is in crisis mode right now, or at least one part of it is. We have a deadline that's an actual deadline: if we miss it, the project will be a corpse, and my career won't seem very healthy either. So I'm on my way to help out.
No time in Tucson, except to pick up a car and get to Sierra Vista as fast as I can. No evenings free, which is OK. If I had free time, I can't even wear the kind of shoes I'd like to. And no pedicure: I can't get the toe wet for another week.
I didn't even bring anything Meg, really. No pads, no wigs, no bras, no skirts, no dresses, no hose. I do have a couple of polos from the women's department with me, as well as my jeans. And sneakers. And socks and panties. I'm just not overtly female, I guess. Oh, and nightgowns. No pj's this trip!
Actually, that was my plan. But I noticed a bit of extra room in my bag so I packed a couple of lightweight skirts, one long, one short. Just for wearing in my room.
It's really more practical to travel with girl clothes: panties, nightgowns, and (to an extent) women's socks are lighter and thinner than male equivalents, so it takes less room to pack and less effort to carry. Try THAT logic on your wife, the next time you go on a trip together!
I do have my epilator with me. I've been using it on-and-off and I'm still not sure if the hair eventually stops growing, or thins out, with repeated use.
And I may go shopping, just as a consolation prize.
I do gain comfort from the fact that I'll probably be going out in November or December. If we make our deadline. The pressure's on!

Four Options
I'd like to wear something sleeveless. I have some sheath dresses that I've only worn in the house, and there are lots of light, pretty, sundresses in the stores.
This means I'm going to remove more hair than I have in the past.
The biggest problem is Places I Cannot See. It's hard to see parts of the underside of your own arm, your back and the back of your neck. I state the obvious. Legs are easier.
I'm going to have to not only make sure my legs and arms are hairless, but I have to make sure my arms are COMPLETELY hairless, right up to and behind my shoulders, plus underarms. My neck and upper back (at least) must be hairless. My chest doesn't need to be shaved more than usual, although I might go further; I haven't decided yet. I might just get carried away and keep on shaving. I have some tapes for breast forms and I'm thinking about attaching them for the weekend. I'm not sure how that works with sleeping, and I'm not sure how to remove them. And I'm not sure if I'll do that at all, although it would be an interesting experience to not wear a bra, if I don't want to.

Remember, I have a few days to get ready and touch-up since I'll be in Arizona for three nights before my planned first trip out.
1. shaving. My electric shaver works quite well, and I'll probably bring a hand razor as well. That's probably the best combination for chest.
2. epilation. I did try this again, on my arms. It doesn't seem to get everything, it is incredibly itchy, it hurts but not unbearably. I doubt I can use it on places I cannot see. I'd like to try it again on my legs, to see how it does. I can follow up with one of the other options if it doesn't work well.
3. waxing. I have had my brows, back, and arms waxed at different times. I'm considering some body waxing. It's the most expensive option though, and I've had very thorough wax jobs and sloppy ones. I'll be trying someone new.
4. dipilitation. There's always Nair, but that's also tricky for areas I can't see or reach easily. I've also had problems where areas redden and stay red for way too long (upper chest).
I do need to plan and decide NOW. For three of the four, I need to leave some growth or they won't work and shaving is it by default. Since I had to not shave in preparation for last weekend, I think my body hair is long enough for any of the options right now. But if shaving is "it," I should be shaving already to make it easier.
I have not made a decision about my brows yet. I haven't been cleaning them up, and that worries me a bit. I don't want a stranger to work on them. I've had one bad experience (where she worked hard to create boybrows and it looked awful) and the potential for going too far is always present. Maybe if I explain what I want to do and get my brows waxed Tuesday evening I'll be good.

Way Outside My Comfort Zone
I sent an e-mail yesterday. I am committed. I will be going way outside my comfort zone next week, in Arizona. I don't know what day yet, but I'll do it.
This project has two requirements people, one documentation person, seven testers (I've met two), and nine developers.
They all kind of work for me.
I'm not a manager, I'm a dotted line under the manager ~ where you often see the administrative assistant, except I'm not. I have the lofty title of "Chief Engineer." Near as I can tell, my job is to push the engines to warp 9 when they're only made to go warp 8.5 and I have to tell the captain they're going to blow in a bad Scottish accent.
So I wrote these seventeen strangers and said "hi. I want to meet you all when I'm in Arizona."
I'll meet with them as a group and individually.
Friday after work in Sierra Vista, I hope to get dressed, and get a manicure and pedicure. Saturday and Sunday, I hope to shop and do touristy things, as Meg. If I do, I'll be out and forced to do things I haven't had the nerve to do yet, such as eat out and use the ladies'. I hope to get to Tucson and meet a couple of t-women there. I have been too busy to write back, but I hope to make some time to meet them.
I'm more nervous about meeting my peeps.
Perhaps my comfort zone hasn't expanded... just moved.

Ow. OW! OwOwOwOwOwOwOwOw!!
It really wasn't that bad, but I will need to rethink epilation.
For those who aren't familiar with epilators, they are a device that Torquemada would have used to get heretics to confess, if only there had been electricity in the 15th century. They (the epilators, not the Inquisitors) use little tiny tweezers to rip the hair from your person. It is then neatly strewn about your room and the surface of your body, where the little roots stick to anything, without prejudice.
I tried my Braun epilator on my arms and legs prior to my Colorado trip. I did this more than once. It's an experiment, and I'm not done yet.
There Is Pain. It's not horrible, and this battery-powered device claims to work wet or dry, although I only tried it dry. I'm guessing wet it wouldn't have enough traction to yank out hairs.
Considering the number of hairs it missed, I'm also guessing a plug-in model might work better. And, in hindsight, considering the difference between coarse male body hair and finer female body hair, a device made for men might have been a better choice.
I tried to follow the instructions carefully. This meant keeping skin taut, which is difficult when you're working on an arm or a hand.
Sometimes, I'd go over an area and it would look the same. The epilator head would have hairs stuck to it, and my arm would have hairs lying on it, but it seemed like it missed a lot. After I had made several passes, I went over the area with a razor.
An epilator is not for last-minute touch up. Your skin will not look pleasant for a few hours after the procedure.
I avoided areas that might be more sensitive than others, such as my chest, especially after it grabbed my arm a couple of times. The device would catch, the motor would hum instead of spin, and I'd be left with a hickey.
After covering an area, I'd think "that didn't hurt a LOT" and then there'd be a kind of regional pain that's hard to describe. It was, thankfully, short-lived and maybe would have responded well to topical witch hazel, or internal tequila. I didn't have immediate access to either.
I don't think I had allowed the hair to grow out enough before testing the device. As I said, I am going to give it another test in a couple of weeks.
Right now, I have a bigger problem.
I have shaved, waxed, and tweezed. In the past, I have raised moustaches and beards.
NOTHING itched like the post-epilation hairs growing back. Without even thinking about it, I have scratched my wrist raw. I am now doing my best to resist the urge, but it's difficult. I'll be with extended family next week and I rarely worry about my hairless arms attracting attention, but now I have little scabs and redness attracting attention to my arms, which are mostly hairless.
I admit, if I were to go out tomorrow I'd just have to do a once-over to pick up the stray hairs. My understanding is, hairs grow at different intervals and there were hairs that were yanked and hairs that were below the skin at yanktime, and those hidden hairs are now in full bloom. They would have to go. The hairs on my arms and hands are sparse right now. I need to figure out how to prevent the grabbing and the itching. I need to wait a couple of weeks until the hairs are all rip length. I need some time alone so I can use this without the boys wondering what the heck dad's doing now.
And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go scratch.

Hair Today
I'm pretty sure I used that subject before....
I'm writing in advance because I expect to not have time to get a post in today.
As I mentioned yesterday, I bought an epilator on Saturday. Saturday afternoon, my wife was out and my youngest was at a friend's house. I sent my oldest out to pick him up and that meant about 20 minutes on my own. I had charged the epilator earlier that day; since my office is in the basement I could hide a plug for an hour and no-one would notice.
When the house was empty, I tried the epilator on my right leg. It was disappointing, but it was also not a great test. I had been shaving arms and legs as I shaved each day, knowing I'd be going out soon. I only stopped a couple of days earlier and I don't think the hairs are at an optimal length.
I wanted to do my arms instead, but knew I'd be wearing short sleeves Sunday, so I didn't. I thought of doing my chest, but didn't want to risk showing red dots, if that was the result.
Probably because the hair wasn't that dense, it didn't hurt horribly. It did feel like I should be bleeding after I was done. I wasn't. It also didn't leave a lasting impression. Sunday, my legs looked fine. The one I tested on didn't look different from the other (except for the lack of hair).
Sunday, my wife is out again. I'm skipping another clothing swap because tax day is coming and I am not prepared. At 6, I will take my youngest to Sunday school; his brother will pick him up at 8.
That means I have two hours to try the epilator on my arms (no short sleeves before I go), pack Meg's stuff without prying eyes, and have dinner.
If necessary, I can skip dinner. My plan is 1 ~ epilate arms and maybe more. 2 ~ pack while it recharges. 3 ~ unplug the darn thing before the boys get home!
I wrote the above Sunday afternoon, which explains why I'm being even worse than usual with tenses. If I have time after 8, I'll add a review of my episperience. I think I coined a new word ~ and not a very good one at that. :D
By the way, this is the Braun I wanted to get.

On the Road Again
Did I mention I'm going to Colorado Springs for a few days? I'll be leaving in about ten hours from post time.
I planted a seed, but I haven't watered it. I said to my wife "I had so much fun travelling dressed last time, I'm thinking of doing it again." She scoffed and said something about having to go through security. I said "do you think I'd be the first?" She said "no" and changed the subject.
I won't be flying pretty, but I will have Meg in my luggage.
I have three days to do the work, and it looks like three days is far too long, unlike my last project.
I expect to be at the customer from 8:30 until no later than 5:30. I also expect my evenings to be free, although I may have another customer (whom I'm waiting on) to work on in the evening.
There is a shopping center less than a half-mile from the hotel.
I'll arrive late Monday and probably just shower and go to bed. If I'm awake enough, I may do some hair removal. I was shaving daily so I could spend some time working on arms, legs, chest, but then I stopped once I decided I'd only be changing in Colorado. I'll was thinking of bringing a bottle of hair remover, or buying one after I arrive. Instead, on Friday, I started researching epilators and on Saturday I bought a Braun. The model I considered was only available at WalMart and there are no WalMarts near here. I considered picking one up in a Colorado Springs store, but then I'd be cutting it close. So to speak. I'd probably have to wait until Tuesday (since they'll probably be closed when I arrive Monday).
So I got a more expensive model at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's rechargeable, so I charged it today. I didn't mention my purchase to my wife, but I never do. She knows I buy stuff; she doesn't ask what. I think she's afraid that would be misconstrued as interest.
So now that I think about it, I think I'll try to remove some hair on Monday, just to see how much it really hurts and if it leaves marks. I had heard that it can, but they disappear within 10 hours or so. So if I epilate my arms and legs, which are covered at work anyway, I should be able to go out after work.
I can probably get out Wednesday evening, maybe Thursday evening as well. I fly back east early Friday.
This will be a good trip.
I planted a seed, but I haven't watered it. I said to my wife "I had so much fun travelling dressed last time, I'm thinking of doing it again." She scoffed and said something about having to go through security. I said "do you think I'd be the first?" She said "no" and changed the subject.
I won't be flying pretty, but I will have Meg in my luggage.
I have three days to do the work, and it looks like three days is far too long, unlike my last project.
I expect to be at the customer from 8:30 until no later than 5:30. I also expect my evenings to be free, although I may have another customer (whom I'm waiting on) to work on in the evening.
There is a shopping center less than a half-mile from the hotel.
I'll arrive late Monday and probably just shower and go to bed. If I'm awake enough, I may do some hair removal. I was shaving daily so I could spend some time working on arms, legs, chest, but then I stopped once I decided I'd only be changing in Colorado. I'll was thinking of bringing a bottle of hair remover, or buying one after I arrive. Instead, on Friday, I started researching epilators and on Saturday I bought a Braun. The model I considered was only available at WalMart and there are no WalMarts near here. I considered picking one up in a Colorado Springs store, but then I'd be cutting it close. So to speak. I'd probably have to wait until Tuesday (since they'll probably be closed when I arrive Monday).
So I got a more expensive model at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's rechargeable, so I charged it today. I didn't mention my purchase to my wife, but I never do. She knows I buy stuff; she doesn't ask what. I think she's afraid that would be misconstrued as interest.
So now that I think about it, I think I'll try to remove some hair on Monday, just to see how much it really hurts and if it leaves marks.
