Timeline II, Part II: No More Support

(I hope you guys are taking advantage of national dressup day!  There's a Halloween bonus at the bottom of the post.)

In November 2011, Penny's wife of 15 years (I did not know her name either; I knew her as Aeify) wrote me and asked me to call.  She wanted to discuss something and not in e-mail.

I called.

Penny had died.

We spoke on the phone briefly, cried briefly, and started exchanging e-mails.  Penny and Aeify had little live involvement in the community and I wanted to be there for anything she wanted to talk about that she couldn't share with family and (civilian) friends.

In early December, Aeify wrote that she was coming to DC with a friend for a day or so.

Prior to this, I would ask my wife before I'd meet with an on-line (female) friend.  She'd come up with rules or need to be present or something for no reason I could ever discern.  How an on-line friend is different from, say, a woman I meet at work is not something I could see.

This time, I told her I would be meeting Aeify in DC for breakfast.  I felt it was the right thing to do to be able to talk with her about trans issues without any civilians present ~ especially one who was borderline hostile, as my wife was.

I wend in drab and met Aeify for breakfast and a little walk and talk around DC.

We walked a lot.  We talked a LOT.  I learned some deep, intimate things about her, like her first name (Charity) and Penny's real name.  We spoke about her marriage, how she felt about trans, what was next in her life....

We talked a LOT.  Her friend finally found us and dragged her away.

Sunday Funnies: Close But No Cigar

I like a good joke.  But few things irk me more than a joke that doesn't quite make it.

Here are few coulda-been-funny cartoons.  Click to almost-enjoy.

Homonym toast?
Words that sound similar but have different meanings are homonyms. He's a writer! He KNOWS the test should have been on "different words that mean the same thing."

Fail
If you're gonna play with a prefix, play with a prefix.  "Perverse" is not from the Latin per- (thoroughly) -versus (turn towards).  It's from a single French word.  He could have made puns on adverse, converse, inverse, diverse, universe, even traverse, but not perverse (even though it's a funnier concept ~ it's still a fail).

It's a home run, but you knew that, kid.
The kid should have said "a four base hit." If he knows the phrase "home run," he wouldn't have called it a quadruple.

Do you mean "caterpillar?"
Baby butterflies? Sorry.  Baby butterflies can't fly.

A bit dated.
So this one's about seventy years too late.

Daddy?  I don't get it.
And this one's only forty years too late.

And the winner is...
That looks like about a 30' long telescope. That's a 10,000 millimeter refracting telescope. I can zoom 100x on my camera! He'd probably get 1000-4000 magnification on there. And although I guess the giant mechanism off to the left is supposed to keep the 'scope following a celestial object, it ain't following a seagull. Oh... and there's no such thing as a seagull.

This Could Be A Problem

I'm running late, but here's a "cd-ish" cartoon.  So which room should we use?

"Buzzy?"  Really?

Meg, Peg... Same Thing

It is really.  If someone's trying to call me by my "full name" I can usually tell the age of that person, even if I've never met her.  Over 40 thinks "Margaret."  Under 40 thinks "Megan."

But Margaret is a wonderful names that has more nicknames associated with it than anyone (except Elizabeth).  When I worked for i2, we had a monicker file that had names and nicknames so you could search for a badguy named "Michael" and it would find "Mike" and "Mickey" and even "Miguel."

Alas, I no longer have that file, but I do remember Margaret had more AKAs than anybody.  I remember:

Maggie, Marge, Margie, Margo, Madge, Midge, Peg, Peggy, and of course, Meg.

So I'll take this personally, because it wouldn't be funny if her name was "Meg":
