Is It Just Me?

Am I the only person in the community who hasn't watched the Bruce Jenner interview yet?

I've heard good things from Steven Petrow, the LGBT-focussed columnist at the Washington Post.

The local T group has had a lively discussion of the interview.

An idiot wrote an article for the WaPo: "Trans people need an icon. But Bruce Jenner is the worst possible choice" which is COMPLETELY wrong.  People need to see that even members of their own family (the Kardashians ~ everybody's family) can be transgender.  Until then, it's not real.  I mean, the number of conservative voices who ranted against gays and then said "my child/grandchild/other close relative is gay and I'm rethinking" grows every day.  For the record, I didn't know Jenner was associated with the Kardashian clan and I only have a vague knowledge that they're only famous because they're well known, like Jello or Sarah Palin.

The interview is on my DVR.

  2. You're not the only one! but then it has not been quite such big news this side of "The Pond".

We are everywhere, in all sorts of families and situations, in our current General Election we have trans candidates standing for Labour and Green Parties and some outspoken trans voices on the right as well. We are rockers and classical musicians, artists, potters and film directors. We are also plumbers, gardeners, nurses, and warehouse and office workers. Maybe what we need is not an "icon" simply more media exposure for being who and what we are.

  3. Meg -

On my own, I wouldn't have bothered with the interview. But, having seen it due to the insistence of a friend, I thought it was better than I would have expected. If you can see it, do so....

  4. You are not alone. I have not seen it and I am not sure I will. I wish Jenner luck. I have seen lots of comments about Jenner's being conservative. No surprise here. What is surprising is the lack of tolerance in the T community for folks who may be conservative.

  5. I haven't seen it, thinking it would be just more of Circus K. But my youngest daughter rang me yesterday to say she'd been researching TG issues and had just watched Bruce. She wanted to say she was sorry for not understanding or giving me enough support. I ended in tears of gratitude. Thank you Bruce.

  6. I have finally watched it......and am glad I did.
I thought it was very well done. There was a lot of good information presented in addition to the focus on Jenner.
I agree, watch it if you can.

  7. I watched it. Let me preface by stating that I knew Diane Sawyer before she was famous (she is from Louisville), and have done some business with Bruce Jenner in the past. I knew it wouldn't be a train wreck, not with EP Sawyer's daughter doing the interview, and not with the fact that Jenner's both a smart guy and experienced on TV. In the final assessment, I think it's going to prove to be a watershed event, but there will need to be other celebrity/sports figures coming out, too, for it to really become a movement. Also, keep in mind that, to a Californian, "conservative" means Arnold Schwarzenegger, not Ted Cruz. Jenner votes his wallet and you lose his vote when you talk about raising taxes on wealthy people. I'd welcome Jenner taking a stab at lobbying Mitch McConnell, but there's more to McConnell's opposition to T rights than Republican politics - I know a transitioned TS that worked for Mitch in DC, and she's tried repeatedly to win him over with no success. Suffice to say that Mitch may have, in the past, been a fellow traveler.
