(Please consider attending a Transgender Day of Remembrance event tomorrow night.)
Marian made a comment about preferring bras with a "back closure." I do too. Other girls I've spoken to do as well. We also like back or side zips on dresses.
I've been trying to figure out why. The only thought I have is, it's more feminine. Guy clothes doesn't fasten on the back or side.
But I'm wondering if there's more to it than that. Any ideas, readers?

Bras that fasten in the back are just a natural woman's thing; I have always loved doing it. As for dresses and blouses that button or zip up the back, I think for me, it is so feminine to ask for help to get dressed. So I do have a few back closing things, and I just love them.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started dressing, I think a back zip was more important than the fact that it was a dress.
DeleteI think you are right. Having to do something that is unlike anything you would do as a male - wrapping your arms around your back to do up a bra, slinking stockings up your legs and attaching them to the suspender belt, zipping up skirts or trousers at the side or back - all reinforces the femininity of what you are doing and it feels 'right' to be doing it.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds somewhat ridiculous. But then, the whole thing is a bit ridiculous on the face of it. And nobody said that what we do has to make sense. It just has to feel right. And it really does. Wouldn't you say?
Ellen, If it sounds ridiculous to us, imagine what civilians think!
DeleteMy wife is something like a 58HH size so all of hers are front fastening. I do mine like I learned from some of my GF's fasten in front and rotate around and insert arms into the arm holes. I can unfasten behind me though. Also, since my arms are small and feminine I can zip up most of my dresses, although my mother just bought me a nice Liz Clairborne number that I just can't seem to zip/unzip without help. I wore it to lunch with an old friend and had to have help both times. She made the comment that's one thing she refuses to buy. But we both got "miss"ed at the restaurant, even to the point that our server didn't know I wasn't a Linda ;)
ReplyDeleteA little practice is all it takes to close from behind. And it's a satisfying little trick. I also have an affinity to removing a bra before removing my top. Go figure.
DeleteIf the problem with the dress is you can't reach (not that it needs squeezing) you can tie a piece of string to a safety pin. Put the pin through the zipper head (there's always a hole, right?) and CLOSE THE PIN. Then pull the string over your shoulder. When it's all the way up, remove the pin. Voila!
LOL, my wife's a master at removing her's without taking anything else off. I could do mine as well, but prefer to keep a hand on the pads I have stuffed in mine.
DeleteThanks for the tip, I'll have to try it with this dress some time. I was able to self zip/unzip when I purchased it. The fabric is rather stiff, and the seam around the waist is tight. The spots that give me trouble are the waist and about 3/4 up, right between pushing the zipper up and pulling it up from on top. It seems the angle of how I pull the zipper is important too.
