Meg, Peg... Same Thing

It is really.  If someone's trying to call me by my "full name" I can usually tell the age of that person, even if I've never met her.  Over 40 thinks "Margaret."  Under 40 thinks "Megan."

But Margaret is a wonderful names that has more nicknames associated with it than anyone (except Elizabeth).  When I worked for i2, we had a monicker file that had names and nicknames so you could search for a badguy named "Michael" and it would find "Mike" and "Mickey" and even "Miguel."

Alas, I no longer have that file, but I do remember Margaret had more AKAs than anybody.  I remember:

Maggie, Marge, Margie, Margo, Madge, Midge, Peg, Peggy, and of course, Meg.

So I'll take this personally, because it wouldn't be funny if her name was "Meg":

  1. Patricia has quite a few as well: Pat, Patty, Tricia, Trish, Tisha, Tish. And then there's Catherine/Cathleen (in all its various spellings): Cat, Cathy, Kitty, Kit, Cassy, Catty, Kate.

  2. I picked Kathryn for my daughter's name partly for that reason.
